Set Up Main/Secondary Conversion In Google Tag Manager

Modified on Mon, 31 Jul 2023 at 10:33 AM

1 - Sign into your google tag manager and click on ‘Triggers’ in the Overview section and then click on ‘New’

2 - In the trigger configuration, choose the ‘choose a trigger type to begin setup…’

3 - Select the trigger that will fire the secondary conversion event. There is no simple and universal rule as it will depend on your unique goals. For the purposes of this guide we will choose ‘Page View’ as we want to set the event to fire when customers land on the ‘Add to Cart’ page after adding an item to their cart.

4 - Select trigger fire on ‘Some Page Views’. Select ‘Page URL’, ‘Contains’ and add a keyword from your add to cart page. (For example if your Thank you page URL is www.myawesomeshop.com/34419/checkouts), select ‘checkouts’ as your keyword.

5 - Click the ‘Save’ button.

6 - Click on ‘New Tag’ in the Overview section.

7 - In the tag configuration, choose the ‘Google Ads Conversion Tracking’ tab.

8 - Copy and paste the google ads conversion ID and label from the last step of the last checkpoint into the ‘Conversion ID’ and ‘Conversion labels’ sections.

Leave the Conversion Value, Order ID and Currency Code fields blank. (They will be generated dynamically so there is no need to manually enter anything right now)

Scroll down to the ‘Triggering’ section and click ‘Choose a trigger to make this tag fire..’

9 - Choose the trigger you just created from the last step and hit ‘Save’

10 - Once you see the Trigger and Tag added in the workplace changes, hit submit on the top right.

11 - In the final panel, you will be given the chance to add a name and description to this version. After you have done so, hit “Publish”.

Note: Adding a name and description is optional but recommended. You should enter the information here that will make it easy to know what changes are being made.

12 - That’s it! You should now be able to see the summary of the changes that were just made.
